Catholic bishops in Kenya have issued a sharp rebuke of President William Ruto’s administration, criticizing it for various governance failures and policies that they argue have harmed Kenyans. The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) highlighted several concerns, including unresolved cases of extrajudicial killings and disappearances, particularly of young women and protesters from the Gen Z demonstrations held in June 2024. They emphasized that the government’s silence on these incidents has created widespread distress and distrust among the public.

The bishops also condemned what they called excessive and burdensome taxation. They expressed alarm at President Ruto’s government attempting to reintroduce the 2024 Finance Bill, which had previously been rejected, along with other fiscal measures that have left many Kenyans struggling. Additionally, they accused the government of neglecting its responsibility to settle National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) debts owed to faith-based organizations.

Furthermore, the Catholic leaders voiced opposition to a proposed extension of the presidential term from five to seven years, claiming it represents self-serving politics that require thorough scrutiny. The bishops also criticized delays in establishing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and expressed frustration with rising fees for missionary work permits, a direct hindrance to church operations.

To address these challenges, the KCCB urged the Ruto administration to manage revenues wisely and prioritize genuine, inclusive consultations with stakeholders. They concluded by calling for leadership characterized by justice, honesty, humility, and compassion, praying for divine intervention to guide the nation’s leaders.
